A two and a half year old little girl started her preschool life. Her very first school. Her very first time stepping out of her comfort zone, away from her main caregiver, her ah mah who is quite advanced in age and spent her toddling days confined in a play area at home for both their safety’s sake. This little angel, with her new found freedom, when put into a different and big environment, what do you think she will do?
To give her credit, she was very brave on her first day of school. She never cling on to mummy or cry the whole time at the center. She endured the long 9-10 hours till someone came and fetched her home.
So, a curious little girl, brave and independent at that very tender age, in an interesting place with many other little ones her size … what will she do? Sit down with the rest (who might have started school a year ahead of her) during teaching time and remain cross-legged the whole 20 minutes?
OF COURSE NOT !!!!!
She walked around and explored the environment.
Nothing wrong right?
Wrong. The professionals said that she should be sitting down with the rest and listening attentively to the teacher in front. Please, that teacher is not as captivating as the displays on the shelves! If she is, that girl would not walk about. She would be won over and sat through. Teacher was not even half as interesting as her one eye monster at home. The toys on the shelves looked more inviting. Thus, she invited herself to the toys.
The brainy educators, trained at least 800 hours in the preschool field, some even 1300 hours, called the mum after 4 days of school (only 4 days!) and told her :
Please bring your daughter to see a doctor, we suspect she may have ADHD as she couldn’t sit down with the rest.
Hur ??????????????????????????
She is only two and a half !!!!!
If she is five and a half and still doing this, yes, even I, the cool teacher, will be concerned. But at two and a half? I bet by walking around exploring, she is learning more than those passive ones on the floor.
Our tiny world here called S, is not a very child friendly place. Even in the schools they said which are meant for these little people. Sad but true. And our children here start school very early. Some as young as two months old. Now I know why. So that by their second birthdays, they can sit and don’t walk about in the class.
The failure of our preschool education here.
It is a huge turn off to me.
So, when it is Jeff’s turn to be in a preschool, I am sure I will be in for a tough search for a suitable school for him. He may end up in J’s school. I think he and I may be happy with that.
J = Jesus ?

That’s really mean of the teacher. Totally not aware of what is developmentally appropriate?!
I believe not all teachers are like that; there are some teachers who are better controlled…
